Good Evening SHM Families,

Due to the displacement of our SHM families / staff and the irregular transit schedule, Stuyvesant Heights Montessori will remain  CLOSED on Thursday, Nov. 1st and Friday, Nov. 2nd.  We will resume our regular schedule on Monday Nov. 5, 2012.  This is to ensure proper coverage and ratio of teachers to students. 

Reminder: School will be closed on Election Day -  Tuesday, November 6, 2012.

Good Evening SHM Families,

In keeping with NYC public schools and private schools, SHM will be CLOSED Wednesday, October 31, 2012 due to NYC Transit system's inconsistent or canceled schedules. This is also to ensure that all SHM teachers and families can arrive and depart on time and safely.

Our Fall Festival scheduled for Wednesday, October 31 is postponed.  We will reschedule it for a later date.  Stay safe.

Dear Stuyvesant Heights Montessori Parents,

Welcome back to the 2012-2013 school year! I am thrilled that you have decided to join us again or for the first time.  We are all excited about the opportunity to get to know the new families and to grow with the current families. I am planning for and anticipating a year filled with challenge, learning and excitement.  The following is a brief outline intended to supply you with information concerning the first week of school. Please make sure that you read this thoroughly to help prepare you for the first day. 

MANDATORY PARENT ORIENTATION

Parent orientation will be Thursday, September 13, 2012 from 6:30-7:30p.m. All parent(s) must attend. Please provide appropriate care for your children this orientation is for parents only.

ARRIVAL

The first day of school is Monday, September 10, 2012. Arrival time will begin 8:00a.m. until 8:30a.m.  Circle time will promptly begin at 8:45a.m. It is essential that all children arrive before circle time. When you drop off or pick up your child, we ask that you keep your conversation with the teachers at a minimum so they can concentrate on settling the children and managing their class.

HOW TO BEGIN THE NEW SCHOOL DAY CALMLY 

If parents handle the situation correctly, they can reduce their little one’s separation anxiety. Follow these tips:

Before school begins encourage your child's independence in other areas, such as letting him pick out some of his new school clothes. The confidence they will gain from tackling the new task will spill over into feeling good about their new school (return to school) situation. Drop off  should be kept short and sweet. Let the teacher receive your child at the door, give her a kiss or a hug, say, “I love you” – and let your child walk into the classroom.  If you prolong the good-bye process, you are giving your child the false hope that you will stay. By lingering, you’re also encouraging her to be clingy the next day because she’ll see that "clinginess" gets results. Rest assured that once you leave, your child will quickly rebound. Within minutes, most kids are perfectly fine and happily engaged in an activity. Transitioning into school is a process and takes time. Your child needs your encouragement and support.  You have made a wonderful decision on choosing our school; trust your judgment and yourself -- we're all in this together!

DISMISSAL

The school day ends at 3:00p.m. promptly and extended day begins at 3:00p.m. until 6:00p.m. All persons picking up children must be listed on the emergency contact forms. We will not release your child without this form or written consent with your signature.  

LUNCH

Please put your child’s name on their lunch bag, thermos, spoon, water bottle, etc. Also remember that if you are sending a hot lunch to send it in a thermos. We can not heat your child’s lunch (no exceptions). Please remember to include napkins, utensils, an icepack, a drink, and water bottle. It is very important that you do not pack cookies, candies, chips, cupcakes, or other non-nutritious food in your child’s lunch. Remember we are a nut/seed free-zone (NO NUT PRODUCTS).  Please read carefully read all ingredients on labels.  If your child is staying for extended day, please provide an additional snack and drink.

All children will need the essential items on the first day of school, 1 - fitted crib sheet, Lunch bag with lunch (hot lunch in thermos), complete change of clothes (labeled), Pull ups (pottery training children),

Immunizations for 2012-2013 school year must have an  August or September 2012 date (make doctors appointments now). For children to begin school in September all medicals must reflect this date even if you have a current medical.  Attached is a blank medical form and and it can also be downloaded at our blog

End Of The Year Celebration June 22, 1012

Dear Parents,

You are invited to attend our special End of the Year Celebration on Friday, June 22, 2012.  If you can come, please meet us in the gymnasium at 10:00 a.m.  Everyone is invited to attend!  After our program we will have light refreshments.  We are asking all families to bring a pastry item and /or a refreshment. On the morning of the celebration please arrive at the regular school time (by 8:45 a.m.) to give the students time to be assimilate with their class before performances.  Pastry and refreshment sign up sheets will be posted  in the hall for each classroom on June 1st.   You can download this flyer by clicking the link above to invite family and friends.

Tuition Schedule

Although it’s now late in the school-year, our enrollment is  increasing and we anticipate that we will be full for our 2012-2013 school year. I also wanted to remind all families of children who are five years old that our program goes up to Kindergarten.  

2012-2013 contracts are due April 15, 2012 along with deposits and F.A.C.T.S. forms.  I have included a tuition and deposit outline. Careful consideration has been given to tuition for 2012-13 school year. It is SHM's top priority to balance  the   dual   needs of retaining and attracting the very best teachers and administration staff while keeping tuition as affordable as possible. Tuition schedules for 2012-2013 are as follows:

The deposit is non refundable. It is a portion of the tuition and holds your child's slot at the school.  Although most activities and materials are included in the tuition minor class donations and small event fees are a part of school culture.

Since the stability of our school and quality of its programs are of the utmost importance, we are always seeking ways to make improvements to benefit everyone.  We have contracted with FACTS Management company to help us manage our tuition program.  FACTS is used by over 5,000 schools nationally, including many schools locally (St. Anns, Broooklyn Friends, Bishop Kearny High School, Brooklyn Free School, Brooklyn Waldorf School, St. Savior High School).  We are excited to be working with them and are confident this program will lead to greater financial stability for the school.  We have adopted the following tuition payment policy for the next school year.  Families can pay their tuition bill in one way:

• Full Payment tuition by July 1, 2012. this payment should be made directly to the school and entitles you to a $500 tuition discount.

• 11 automatic monthly payments through the FACTS Payment Plan.  Payments will start September 2012 and are due the 1st of the month.  There is a $43 per  year, per family charge for using this option.

• Please note that we no longer offer monthly invoice payments. 

• You will authorize automatic bank payments directly from your bank account for your monthly tuition bill.  Please be assured that neither FACTS  nor the school will have direct access to or any knowledge about the status of your bank account . It is simply a pre-authorized bank-to-bank transfer of funds.

• Tuition can also be paid with pre-authorized credit card payments

• To assure that all F.A.C.T.S. forms  and contracts are filled out properly you must sign contracts and fill out F.A.C.T.S. forms in the office.

We appreciate the opportunity  to serve your family in the academic, and social development of your child.  Together we are dedicated to your children and to the mission of the school.  Working with FACTS is one more step in assuring we can continue our mission. SHM attends the Groundbreaking of Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture

I would like to thank all of the parent attending the Groundbreaking Ceremony and to those that could not attend but supported SHM children and teachers and families.  I will be sending a newsletter dedicated to this event.  I would like to include your favorite parts of the event as well as your children's  favorite part of this event in this newsletter. You may send pictures as well. I would love to see them.

This was a great time for all of us and I will write more in a newsletter very soon.  Payment for the van transportation can be paid in the office or left with the teachers. Please make all checks payable to Stuyvesant Heights Montessori. Please note that the payments for the van are based on head count even if a child was sitting on a lap.

Smithsonian Groundbreaking

Dear Parents as we prepare in last days before our Smithsonian Ground breaking Trip I would like for you to note the following and use as a check list.   The dinner is canceled The List of Attendees are final and have been submitted Do not submit names to the RSVP list, or show up without being listed Sign a Media Release Form for your child Bring Valid photo ID Bring your child's birth certificate for children’s ID Don't forget your coins, Email tally of coins collected ASAP Everyone going to the Groundbreaking from SHM will meet at the L”Enfant Hotel  Your are fully dressed and ready to depart at appointed time Depending on who will be in the tent opposed to the auditorium will meet at hotel:    8a.m. SHARP for the tent group and 9a.m. SHARP for the Auditorium group At an additional cost ($20 Adults, $10 Children) Buffet breakfast will be served at the L'Enfant Hotel beginning at 6am (you are welcome to eat before gathering) Children are fully rested Tuesday night because of such an early start Please make sure all children/adults bathroom needs are met before departing for the ceremony Dress code : Dress as though you were going to see the president!                Adults: Business Attire   Children: Suits and Dresses Please be mindful of children's behavior. As noted in the prior itinerary we will have a dinner in the L' Enfant Plaza Hotel restaurant (The American Grill) on Tuesday February 21, 2011 at 6:30p.m.  The cost of this dinner will be what ever you select from the menu plus taxes and tip.  I would like for you to look over the menu and submit your selections with payment by February 15, 2011. I have requested a Children's Menu and the Hotel will submit this menu soon. They did tell me that the Children's Menu will be approximately $10.

SHM Washington D.C. Smithsonian Groundbreaking Itinerary

2012: A Ground Breaking Year!

The National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) has Invited Stuyvesant Heights Montessori to join them for their official groundbreaking ceremony in Washington D.C. This is Smithsonian's first museum dedicated to African American History. This museum will be built on the National Mall in Washington D.C. Groundbreaking for the 300,000 square foot building will occur on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 and the museum is expected to open in 2015.  Prior to the construction of this site the Smithsonian’s NMAAHC launched its website www.nmaahc.edu giving the public an opportunity to help shape the museum's collection. Our children’s books will be submitted into the museum's collection! The museum would also like for our students (in the presence of high powered givers) to submit coins during the ceremony as a symbolic gesture that even the smallest person can make a difference. 

We have been invited as a result of the wonderful cultural studies project that SHM’s children participated in last year. Each class created a book, documenting an era in African American History and money was collected and donated to the construction of the NMAAHC. We called it “Collecting Change To Make a Change”. In return the NMAAHC saw fit to include our children in this historic event. This will be a momentous occasion for Stuyvesant Heights Montessori students, parents and teachers from 2010 and 2011. SHM’s trip to D.C. will occur on Tuesday, February 21- Wednesday, February 22.  

We will be staying at the L'Enfant Plaza Hotel, located close to the groundbreaking site. Ideally, I would like everyone to stay at the same hotel, but if it is not possible I ask that we leave from a  common location to arrive at the ceremony together. We will leave for the groundbreaking on Wednesday morning from the L'Enfant Plaza Hotel at 8:30 a.m. sharp. This will be a central location for everyone that is associated with Stuyvesant Heights Montessori. Please be on time.

There will be a mandatory meeting for everyone who will be attending this ceremony from Stuyvesant Heights Montessori, January 18, 2012 at 6.p.m. I need  to inform you of specific information concerning our role in this ceremony. I quote “ Dear Tracey nothing about this ceremony will be simple”.  Please be in attendance on January 18, 2012 to hear important details concerning  the trip. 

Transportation

Unfortunately we will not be chartering a bus. There were not enough families that chose this option. Most preferred driving to Washington.  An affordable and comfortable option is the bus. Mega Bus, Bolt Bus or Greyhound.  All have frequent trips to D.C. Please check their websites for more info. They typically arrive in D.C's Union Station . You may then take a short cab ride to the L'Enfant Plaza Hotel.
